2024 MEXT Postgraduate Scholarship

The 2024 Japanese Government (MEXT) Postgraduate Scholarship (Embassy recommendation scheme) are now open, and application forms are available to download via the Embassy of Japan website.

This postgraduate programme is:

  • For a minimum period of 18 months
  • For UK graduates who want to pursue independent research or enrol on a degree course in Japan
  • To study any subject as long as it is relevant to your expertise or field of previous study
  • Not dependent on Japanese language ability (except for certain courses)

Benefits

  • University tuition fees paid
  • Six months of Japanese laguage tuition if required
  • Monthly allowance and return airfare to Japan
  • Student visa

Eligibility

All applicants must:

  • Be a UK citizen and hold a UK passport*
  • Be under 35 years
  • Be a graduate, or due to graduate before they depart for Japan

Application documents should be submitted by email for preliminary selection to the address below, to arrive no later than Wednesday 31 May 2023 at 5pm (BST). Digital recommendation letters must be emailed to the same address directly from referees:

Who can apply?

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Have a disability, mental health or long term health condition (which includes dyslexia, dyspraxia, visual impairment, hearing impairment, diabetes, epilepsy, depression, anxiety disorders, and any other physical or mental impairments or health conditions)
  • Intend to be enrolled in or accepted as a student in a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD program at an accredited university in Europe for the 2023-2024 academic year
  • Be studying computer science, computer engineering, informatics, or a closely related technical field
  • Demonstrate a strong academic record
  • Have a clear passion for computer science

Application Process

Applicants will be asked to complete an online application through EmployAbility which includes:

  • General background information (e.g. contact information and details about your current and intended universities)
  • Resume/CV
  • Academic transcripts from your current and prior institutions (if you have earned a prior degree)
  • One letter of reference from a professor, instructor, adviser or supervisor
  • Responses to a series of questions about your passion for and ability in computer science

Recipients will be selected based on the overall strength of their essays and application materials compared to the entire applicant pool. Please ensure that your chosen referees are aware of your application and are ready to supply you with the reference.

Master’s Degree Scholarships for OR and Analytics Students

Each year, The Operational Research Society awards a £10,000 scholarship to a talented student who wishes to study for a master’s in OR, analytics or applied mathematics but may be unable to continue their studies because of financial limitations. The OR Society want to help students fulfil their potential and become impactful contributors to society through the problem-solving power of operational research (OR).

To be eligible, applicants must be a UK national applying for or due to start a master’s degree where at least 40 percent of the modules relate to OR methods. 

The deadline for applications is 28 February 2023.
